The Dordogne region is famous for its gorges, caves and other prehistoric sites. Some of the caves have regular music and light shows for visitors - and to see the most impressive gorges, head for the river. The river winds its way through stunning deep-sided valleys and gorges past many of the area’s most famous towns and landmarks.
The scenery is best seen from the river itself, so why not hire a canoe? Large and stable, the canoes are suitable for families with young children - and there are many places along the river to hire them. Once you reach your destination downstream, you are collected and then driven back to your car. Don’t forget to take a picnic with you which you’ll be able to munch on one of the little beaches by the river bank. And don’t forget your take a camera to capture the spectacular views along the way.
If you prefer more gentle pursuits, watch out for the various festivals and fairs which are held throughout the summer. Choose from re-enactments of historical battles and traditional medieval jousting - or simply sample the local wine from Monbazillac or St-Emilion at one of the many wine festivals. There’s always live music and you might even see some fire-eating or juggling if you’re really lucky!
