Soumensac village [click to enlarge]Bas d’Avant is situated in the Dordogne close to the Lot border. The region is rich with heritage and has an infinite choice of famous mediaeval towns, churches and castles to explore, as well as swimming, tennis, cycling, horse riding, fishing, boat trips, hot air ballooning...
Eymet, a picturesque bastide town, is just 6km from Bas d’Avant. Founded in 1270, the town has several castles, Romanesque chapels and ancient timbered houses. The delightful medieval square has a busy market every Thursday morning - and the town has a supermarket, a post office, a doctor, a pharmacy, banks, shops, restaurants and bars.
The village of Loubes Bernac (10 minutes) has a bar & pizza restaurant and a grocery shop which is open every morning. The shop sells all the basic essentials for those days when you don’t fancy a trip to Eymet.
The pretty hilltop village of Soumensac is even closer. The village has a reservoir which is great for cycling and walking - and you can picnic down by the water. During the summer, Soumensac has a farmers’ market where you can buy delicious local produce. You can even eat it on the spot in chairs put out by the stallholders – food doesn’t come much fresher than that! And on Friday evenings, there’s a weekly wine tasting where you can buy 10 litres of the local wine for 17€. Don’t expect to remember much about it the next morning, though!
The famous town of Bergerac (20 minutes) has a cinema, stylish boutiques and excellent restaurants. The pedestrianised "old" quarter also has many authentic 15th and 16th-century buildings which have been restored. The town straddles the River Dordogne and there are any number of boat trips up and down the river to choose from. Lake Pomport, on the outskirts of Bergerac, has a beach area with safe swimming, as well as other water-based activities such as pedalos and an inflatable boom. Bowling and go-karting are also available in Bergerac.
Bas d’Avant is in the heart of "wine country" - Bordeaux is 90 minutes away, St-Emilion is 60 minutes away and Monbazillac (famous for its château and sweet wines) is only 15 minutes away. More local still are the Bergerac and Duras wines, which are exceptionally good value. If you want to explore the area’s vineyards, look out for the brown "La-Route-des-Vins" signs.

A little history…
Situated on the River Dropt, Eymet has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, although it was officially founded on 28 June 1270 by Alphonse de Poitiers. He constructed several "new" bastide towns in the area: Ste-Foy in 1255, Castillonnès in 1259, Villeréal in 1267 and finally Eymet in 1270.

Eymet adopted the Protestant religion in the 1550s, but the town's Protestant church was destroyed in 1621 on the orders of Louis XIII - and the replacement Protestant church was destroyed in 1671 on the orders of Louis XVI. An imperial order given by Napoleon I in 1804 allowed the present Protestant church to be built on the site of the old ones.
